Hi,

My nephew had microphtalmia on his right eye. He had 5 years old. His doctor during the last visit made some measures and recomend an enucleation (remove the eye) of his microphalmic eye. The child had some disconfort with the use of the prostetic and the doctor believe that it is the best option in order to keep the right grow on the facial bones. The child does not had any eye infection, his eyes are normal under the circunstances, and it is not any unsymetric on the facial bones actually. My questions are the following: How often a microphtalmia had to be treated with enucleation? Is it strictly necessary? Why the disconfort using the protetic over the microphtalmic eye? Which is the best place for a second medical oppinion? Thanks a lot, please help and advice,

Reynaldo

I was really troubled by your post so I asked my ocularist because I had an appointment today for my daughter. He said that an eye should never be removed or enuculated (spell?) unless there is pain or disease, never because of the prosthetic. Thanks for all the info from everyone. His name is Dr. Marcus Soper and lives in Houston, TX.

Personally with our daughter we have always been told they prefer to keep the eye as it is the best thing to do.

My daughter has countless irritations and infections and wears a scleral shell, but we just persisit with it.
