My son is 4 and has conformers in both eyes and he too has exessive drainage at times. Yes, topical antibiotics help, but we just have to continously clean his eyes either with a warm washcloth or with saline solution. We do the best we can, but with cold/flu season, there is not a whole lot we can do, but wipe as much as possible without irritating him. He will let us know if we need to remove the conformer to clean it or not. When we remove it we rinse his eye out with saline solution and clean the conformer with dish soap and water before placing back in.

Good luck

My son has unilateral microphthalmia. From the time he was 1 1/2 - 3 years of age we went through a miserable time with discharge. With the exception of a week here or there my son was constantly being given ointments/eye drops for 'eye infections'. I was going back and forth between the PO and the Ocularist trying to get to the root of the problem.

The PO told me on many occassions that there was no way that his tear ducts could be possibly blocked. I don't know what he was basing this on as the only way that I know to determine this is by probing the tear ducts. Anyways, we were dealing with the top specialist for our area, who was I to suggest that he was wrong. My son was booked in with another doctor for surgery and the Ocularist suggested to me that I ask this doctor to check his tear ducts to see if they were blocked. His bottom ducts were totally blocked and the top ones partially blocked. That doctor probed the ducts and after that there was absolutely NO discharge. I would not have believed it. I had assumed that discharge was just something that my son had to put up with. Since then, the only time he gets discharge is when he gets a cold.

Good luck.

My daughter is 2 1/2 years old and has had terrible drainage and infection issues. Finally our ocularist just drilled a hole in the bottom inside corner of the conformer. This has greatly improved drainage. I'm relieved to not be so dependent on eye drops.
