My son was born with microphthalmia and has no abilty to see. He is almost a year old and still cannot fully sit on his own . And Ive done my research and have discovered most blind babies skip the crawling stage and go straight to walking, but im afraid that him being blind hinders alot of his physical growth. Some please help me with any information or advice you may have

Where I live, Early Intervention Development is offered. They come to your home to evaluate the child, they hold a planning meeting to plan ways of treating developmental issues and they come to your home once a month to help and see how your child is progressing. I have scheduled an evaluation for my 3 month old son with micropthalmia. Fortunately, my son has vision in both eyes, however the left eye does not open, so he is considered to be visually impaired. Compared to other 3 month old children, my son is not developing correctly. As hard as it is to watch this happen, it helps me to know that God is in control and eventually my son with 'catch up' if I continually work with him. I hope this helps you a bit. I will pray!

Make sure you get in touch with your school district, they likely have early childhood intervention that can help you out.

I have two kids with micropthamia and our oldest boy now is 4 was behind on rolling over, standing, crawling, walking etc. He never really crawled but did a scooting thing. I think he was 18months before he actually started walking on his own.

For him, he also has a condition called hypotonia which means low tone to put it simple. So part of his issue was he lacked the 'strength' to do it. Your doctors should be able to determine if that is an issue and please do check it out to see if you should have him in physical therapy.

Our 2 year old is not walking on her own yet but will if she is holding a hand or a couch or a cart but in space she sits she also has mild hypotonia.

Being blind should not hinder physical growth but there can be other conditions.

Hi, my name is casey. My one year old daughter has unilateral microphthalmia in the left eye. she was also behind learning to sit. She has had early intervention since she was two months old. Last month she finally learned to sit. every child is different. but with emily as soon as she learned to sit she is now progressing faster. She does the army crawl but prefers to sit and stand up. Have hope every child has their own drive. even though the vision is impaired and it takes longer for them to adjust to things. they will do it. just work with your child as much as you can sitting them between your legs to play with toys. Emily really benifitted from using the bumbo seat at first since it gives support. Also when using a high chair you can roll towels up and place around the child and one around the head to support them while sitting up. Again these are things that helped my daughter. i hope this helps you.:D

Hi Allyson! My son also was a little behind sitting and walking. He has bilateral micro and limited vision. We also used early intervention. He could see light so we would place light boxes around the room to excourage mobility. They always had good ideas to help us help him. He also didnt crawl but scooted on his butt. Get help and I wish you the best. www.caringbridge.org/visit/masonarchibald for more info on my boys and their journey. Best wishes to your family, April

Hi, my daughter Ava was born with bilateral anophthalmia and is fully blind. She was behind with her crawling, and is now 2.5 and is almost walking. She can stand and walk along the couch, but she is still too scared to let go fully. She is almost 3 and will be starting school soon. She is doing really well with all of her physical therapists, occupational therapists, and teachers.

I think so you have to do eye replacement operation for your son. Which will better for him, because in now a days this technology grow much more.

Hi Allyson I want to say have some patience, He will learn to sit soon. Every child is different from each other. So your son may take little longer time than usual.
