Hi Patti
I have always found it easier to explain to kids than adults. Kids are just curious and don't understand that it could be hurtful to ask questions. I just try to explain to them, based on their age. If they are older, they can handle the whole truth, if they are younger, I state it in easier terms.
Its good your daughter is in school so hopefully she can be with the same children most of the time so that they know why she looks the way she does and the kind of "extra" help she may need. My son is only 2--1/2 so we are not there yet. He is starting preschool in August so we will see how that goes! YIKES.

I am so sorry your daughter has not been able to develep any close friends yet. I am so sorry she and your family are going through this. Maybe it would help if the "disability" and her "needs" are explained to her classmates and neighbors it would help? I honestly don't know, as I said we aren't there yet. I do know that our neighbor kids range from 2-1/2 up to 13 they each know what is wrong with my son and I have explained to them how they need to lead him to places and guide him to areas. They actually do a pretty good job at it. I do have my 12 yr old neighbor babysit him sometimes too, however, he is not completely blind either he does have some vision so he is not at the same level of blindness as your daughter. He does look different though because he had surgery on his skull and he wears very thick glasses and he has nystagmus. So, I often find myself explaining why he looks this way.

Sorry, not much help, but I do find the more people are informed the better things are.

GOod luck to you both.
Michelle

Did anyone happen to see the episode of Extreme Home Makeover in the USA this past Sunday? Is was about redoing a home for a man who became blind to do a gunshot to head during a robbery. Anyway, they had some blind people on, one was a child with a cane, and I have to say he was an inspiration. Also some elderly couple who was playing golf!

I guess I am not in your shoes yet, because my son has not entered school. Its nice to be able to hear other stories and how others deal with "growing up" He is supposed to be starting preschool this August, so I'll see how that goes.

Thanks!
Michelle
