ican Stories - Jacob

A Drummer in the Marching Band!

Jacob (born with bilateral anophthalmia) is a 12 year old 6th grader attending his local, public middle school. He has always loved music and when opportunity came to pick an instrument in 5th grade he said, “Sign me up”! At this point, Jacob was already into his 2nd year of private piano lessons and doing well with that. His instrument of choice at school…the drums! He had weekly lessons and got input from his Braille teacher (who began teaching him the Braille music code), the drum and music teachers, his Educational
Technician at school, as well as his peers. All went quite successfully where he learned a variety of drums: bass, snare, even a full drum set up! He was thrilled and even had some opportunity to play on the keyboard.

In grade 6, students participate in the general concert band as well as the marching band (in season). Well, for sure this would take some creativity so that Jacob could carry and play his drum, as well as keep step (literally!) with his peers. From Jacob’s desire to be a part of the marching band and everyone else’s strong commitment to make that dream come true…a plan was born.

The idea was to “link” Jacob to peers in the drum line who would help him keep step so that the better part of his attention and energy could be devoted to playing. With all folks on board to make it a success…it indeed was! Jacob marched with his peers in two parades this fall and plans are now gearing up for the spring.
